As a novice rider, I was a bit concerned about how serious a weekend this would be. I wasn’t really sure if it was going to be more geared to staying focused on the ride and its rigors or if everyone would be relaxed and having a good time.
Well, my fears were soon alleviated! The night we arrived there was a reception in a hospitality suite on one of the top floors of the hotel with an amazing view of the Strip. Appetizers and some great wines from Cline Cellars were provided. We then proceeded to go downstairs to the Red Rock Lanes where there was a bountiful spread of meats and cheeses, salads, cookies and more. We were able to bowl several games and drink some more vino. All in all, a really enjoyable evening!
The following morning we all got together for a practice ride. We made a quick 10 -15 mile ride up into the Red Rock Conservation Area. We all were able to get comfortable on our bikes and take note of any last-minute adjustments that needed to made by the crack team of repair experts provided for the ride. The course was laid out by a husband and wife team who had organized many rides like this in the past. They also led us through the practice ride and promised to be visible on the ride the next day in case of any problems.
Personally, I was a bit nervous for the following day. Though in good shape, I had never ridden more than 20 miles in one day. I was planning to do the 36 mile course, as I hadn’t had much time to train. That night we had another really good meal, a pasta bar to carbo-load for the next morning! During dinner while talking to everyone, my nervousness started to subside. Everyone was so relaxed and matter of fact about the ride. Basically, do what you can do and have fun! Also, drink lots of water!!!
The morning of the ride was exciting, as everyone was full of positive energy and ready to get started! The ride itself was beautiful! We went through the very scenic Red Rock loop, full of hills, canyons, the amazing red mountains and many riders. There were several support stations over the course which provided water, Gatorade, Powerbars and other goodies.
All in all it was a great experience, well-planned and first-class in every respect. And what made it even more worthwhile is that we were all there to raise funds for Breast Cancer Network of Strength’s mission – for all those touched by breast cancer.
I look forward to the 2010 Ride to Empower in Utah’s Zion National Park, another beautiful spot!!! Hope you, too, will be moved to join the Southern California riders and register. The more riders, the more fun, the more energy, the more successful the event.
